Mitch Marsh earns captaincy of Australia Twenty20 cricket team leading into World Cup

Mitchell Marsh will be named Australia’s new Twenty20 captain today, less than 12 months out from next year’s World Cup.

It’s understood Marsh’s appointment at this stage may be only for the upcoming limited overs tour of South Africa, as selectors look to take time to assess all the options available to them beyond this year’s ODI World Cup.

Marsh was one of the most impressive players for Australia during the recent Ashes, even though he only played three Tests and the leadership appointment is another nod to his growing importance in the national set-up.

At 31 years of age and with a history of injury troubles, Marsh may not be a long-term captain for Australia, but it is an honour he has earned and deserves.
