Soccer legend backs bid for World Cup to head down under

Italian soccer great Francesco Totti has declared it’s time to bring the men’s tournament to Australia following the nation’s huge success in hosting the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Totti — who broke Australian hearts with a penalty kick at the 2006 World Cup – on Monday visited the MCG for an exclusive Herald Sun photo shoot and interview.

He said having stadium’s like the MCG, passionate fans and proven major event planning meant the time was right for Australia to score the World Cup for the first time.

“I see a lot of potential in Australia hosting a men’s World Cup as well, he said.

“You’ve got the right mentality, the people love football, the numbers in fans and stadiums.

“The woman’s World Cup was an appetiser and it would be really good to receive a men’s World Cup as well.’’
