Denver Nuggets are a budding dynasty

Jordan’s Chicago Bulls (15-2, 1991), Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant’s Los Angeles Lakers (15-1, 2001), Tim Duncan’s San Antonio Spurs (15-2, 1999; 15-2, 2003), and LeBron James’ Miami Heat (16-7, 2013). The fact that the Nuggets’ run is in such esteemed company should not be understated.

One reason the Nuggets’ dominant playoff run might not receive as much recognition is their lack of a superstar. While they have a talented roster led by Nikola Jokic, who won the MVP award last season, they do not have a marquee name like LeBron James or Kevin Durant. However, this should not diminish their accomplishments.

The Nuggets’ success can be attributed to their strong team chemistry and depth. Jokic is undoubtedly the team’s centerpiece and a star in his own right, but the Nuggets have multiple players who can step up and contribute on any given night. Jamal Murray, who had a breakout postseason in the NBA bubble in 2020, missed most of last season due to injury. However, other players such as Michael Porter Jr. and Aaron Gordon stepped up in his absence. This depth and versatility make the Nuggets a formidable opponent for any team.

Another factor that contributed to the Nuggets’ championship run was their resilience and ability to come back from deficits. In the first round of the playoffs, they trailed the Portland Trail Blazers 2-1 in the series and faced elimination in Game 6. However, they rallied back to win the series in six games. In the Western Conference Finals, they found themselves down 3-1 to the Los Angeles Clippers but managed to stage another impressive comeback to win the series.

Coach Michael Malone also deserves credit for the Nuggets’ success. He has built a strong culture and instilled a winning mentality in the team. Malone’s ability to make adjustments and motivate his players during crucial moments of the playoffs was evident throughout the Nuggets’ championship run.

Looking ahead to the 2023-24 NBA season, the Nuggets are poised to be contenders once again. They have managed to retain their core players while adding key pieces through trades and free agency. With Murray expected to return from injury, the Nuggets’ backcourt will be even more potent. Jokic will continue to be a force on both ends of the court, and the team’s supporting cast will be crucial in their quest for a championship.

While there will always be teams with more star power or higher expectations, the Denver Nuggets have shown that they have what it takes to be champions. Their dominant playoff run last season should not be overlooked or dismissed. As the 2023-24 NBA season approaches, the Nuggets will undoubtedly be a team to watch, and they have a legitimate chance of bringing a championship to Denver.
