Kalyn Ponga will not be Billy Slater’s safety net.
The Newcastle star is reported to have sent the Queensland coach a text message earlier this week ruling himself out for the rest of the 2023 State of Origin series.
According to News Corp, Ponga’s text informed Slater that the Knights captain has asked not to be considered for selection for the rest of the series — but still has a strong desire to play for Queensland in the future.

The message was reportedly sent before Broncos fullback Reece Walsh dazzled on debut for Queensland, cementing his spot in the Maroons’ No. 1 jumper.
Ponga said on Thursday he is cheering Queensland on but said his focus for now is on Newcastle as he attempts to rediscover his best form.
