A former Socceroo player has given a grim outlook for women’s football once the Matildas “party is over”, fuelling criticism of the Albanese government’s latest commitment.
Former Matilda Dianne Alagich says Australia needs to look after grassroots football as families from across the country support the national team and junior levels.
A record 11.15 million Australians, or 43 per cent of the population, tuned in to watch the Matildas semi-final against England’s Lionesses last Wednesday.
Even the Albanese government caught Matildas mania, promising $200 million towards women’s sport in an effort to build on the enthusiasm around their campaign.
However, Fox Sports commentator and former Socceroos player Robbie Slater argued that the Matildas’ success won’t catapult the development of women’s soccer.
