The World Cup has been marred with controversy after an incriminating moment during the Netherlands-Portugal clash that has sent fans wild.

With a break in play in the 70th minute with midfielder Danielle Van de Donk down, Dutch coach Andries Jonker appeared to insist that she remain down in order to give instructions to her teammates.

Vision shows Jonker appearing to tell Van de Donk to “sit down”, having just returned to her feet.

After a short protest in which Van de Donk appears to say that “Daphne could do it”, ostensibly referring to goalkeeper Daphne van Domselaar, Van de Donk takes her place on the Dunedin turf and waits for the referee to come over.

In the subsequent break in play, Jonker is seen instructing his players in a huddle before the game resumed.
