Field umpire Ray Chamberlain said the umpiring fraternity hurt when an incorrect decision made headlines and none more than the individual at the centre of the controversy, with the league’s reinforcing its position to umpires on Tuesday night.
“If we see something that doesn’t stack up, and we’ve had a couple, some to do with scoring some to do with out of bounds, we’ve had a couple. If we see something, we are strongly encouraged to get it right. And that was affirmed to us last night at training,” Chamberlain told SEN on Wednesday.
Having tried to put himself in the position of the officiating field umpires, he conceded there were few of the usual signs apart from the post-goal celebrations of Keays that would have encouraged him to intervene. But he conceded the decision was incorrect, and a review should have been called for at that late stage of the game, with just 70 seconds left on the clock, to remove the prospect of an error.
