Former world No.1 Jason Day has vowed not to throw in the towel on the Open Championship after a slow start at Royal Liverpool.
The 2015 PGA Championship winner puzzlingly has only one top-10 result at the UK major, a tie for fourth in that year’s Open at St Andrews, where he missed a playoff by one shot. “Is this is a major championship that I haven’t really had good results in? Yes, … I played great at St Andrews [in 2015] year, and finished one shot out of the playoff. I enjoy links golf.”
On Thursday at Royal Liverpool, Day carded a one-over 72 that left him six shots back of the clubhouse lead. Day’s 72 – which featured a double on the 10th, three birdies and two bogeys – didn’t drop him out of contention. But it has left the 13-time PGA Tour with plenty of work over the next three rounds.
