New Zealand fell victim to a brutal offside call that ruled out an equaliser against the Philippines as the World Cup co-hosts slumped to a shock 1-0 defeat in their second group stage match.
The Football Ferns opened the tournament against Norway with their first-ever World Cup win (1-0) in their sixth tournament appearance.
A win against Philippines, coached by Australian Alen Stajcic, would have ensured their place in the knockouts for the first time.
But they’ll now have to wait for their final group stage match against Switzerland to try and make history on home soil.
