Harry Kane’s words this week were salutary: for all the justified euphoria at beating Italy home and away, the sole preoccupation now must be to win a major tournament. To that end, the squad should be stacked with those actively competing at the highest level for their clubs.
Fifteen of my 23 are playing in this season’s Champions League, with an embarrassment of riches available to Gareth Southgate up front. But it is hard to fathom Southgate’s policy of continuing to select players who cannot even secure a start domestically.
