Melbourne fans to miss out on Women’s World Cup frenzy

Melbourne football fans have learnt why they’ve been mainly overlooked ahead of the FIFA Women’s World Cup as the Matilda’s go up against a record 31 teams.

More than 4,000 fans kicked off celebrations for the FIFA Women’s World Cup this morning on the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

New South Wales Tourism Minister John Graham says the upcoming Women’s World Cup has the potential to be one of the biggest sporting events in Sydney since the 2000 Olympics.

Images of thousands dressed in green and gold, camped out in the dark, during the 2022 Men’s World Cup late last year solidified an appetite for the game in Melbourne.

However, strict FIFA guidelines mean that football fans will only see one Matilda’s match – against Canada on July 31 – played in sporting capital Melbourne.
