AFL photographer Michael Willson has revealed the crafty way he managed to snap one of the best pictures of the 2023 season.

It came late in the fourth quarter of Carlton’s narrow Elimination Final win over Sydney when Blake Acres threw himself at Errol Gulden’s flying shot on goal.

Acres was adamant he had touched the ball and the decision was sent to the AFL Review Centre (ARC) for clarification.

While the ARC’s vision initially left doubt in the mind of some fans, it was rightly adjudged a behind with Willson’s opportunistic photo providing the ultimate clarity and vindicating the eventual decision.
