Local artists are hoping to paint a three-storey mural of Lance “Buddy” Franklin celebrating the AFL star’s legendary career opposite the ground that hosted his greatest moment.
Apparition Media, the firm behind the Adam Goodes and Josh Kennedy artworks that have become iconic features of Sydney’s Surry Hills, has proposed a design recognising the recently retired Hawthorn and Sydney Swans full-forward.
The mural, to be painted at 485 South Dowling Street, would feature Franklin reacting to kicking his 1000th career goal, a figure he reached at the nearby Sydney Cricket Ground against Geelong on March 25, 2022. He is just the sixth player in AFL/VFL history to hit the historic mark.
Tens of thousands of fans stormed the pitch after the goal, with several visible in the background of the proposed painting.
