West Coast just went heartbreakingly close to their second win of the season. Though the Eagles couldn’t deliver their fans a victory, they did give them something to cheer for writes MARK DUFFIELD.

Stung by the hottest furnace after being beaten by 171 points in Sydney last weekend, West Coast gave St Kilda a hell of a fright. They did not break their 12 game losing streak, beaten by eight points in the end.

Close, no cigar, but this week no furnace either.

It was the first time since round two the Eagles had been closer than 40 points to an opponent. And they weren’t just closer. They were much, much closer. They were in this one up to their eyeballs until a couple of minutes from the end.
