Denver Nuggets’ second preseason game vs. Chicago Bulls

Defense was a major issue for the Nuggets in their preseason game against the Chicago Bulls. Head coach Michael Malone had emphasized the need for improvement on the defensive glass from center Zeke Nnaji, who has been strong on the offensive boards but has struggled defensively. However, Nnaji and the rest of the team had difficulty boxing out the Bulls, resulting in a significant rebounding deficit.

In the first half alone, the Nuggets were out-rebounded 26-13, with Bulls center Andre Drummond grabbing seven offensive rebounds in just over seven minutes of playing time. For comparison, it took Denver until later in the game to secure their first offensive rebound. The inability to secure rebounds allowed the Bulls to extend possessions and generate second-chance points, which ultimately played a role in the Nuggets’ loss.

The lack of defensive fundamentals extended beyond rebounding, as the Nuggets also struggled to contain Chicago’s offensive attack. The Bulls were able to score 133 points, despite the Nuggets rallying from a 14-point deficit in regulation. Denver’s defensive rotations were often slow and ineffective, allowing the Bulls to find open looks and convert on their shots.

While it is only the preseason and teams are still working out their rotations and defensive strategies, the Nuggets will need to address these defensive issues before the regular season begins. Malone will likely emphasize the importance of boxing out and improving defensive communication in practice in order to shore up their rebounding and overall defensive performance.

Offensively, the Nuggets had some bright spots despite the loss. Guard Jamal Murray had a strong showing, scoring 26 points and showcasing his scoring ability with his shooting touch and ability to get to the basket. Murray’s performance is an encouraging sign for the Nuggets, as he looks to regain his form after coming back from injury last season.

In addition to Murray, other players like Michael Porter Jr. and Aaron Gordon also had solid performances on the offensive end. Porter Jr. displayed his scoring ability and versatility, finishing with 21 points and showing his ability to score from inside and outside the paint. Gordon, who was acquired by the Nuggets last season, showcased his athleticism and ability to finish at the rim, contributing 16 points.

Overall, while the Nuggets showed promise on offense, their defensive struggles were a major factor in their loss to the Bulls. In order to be successful in the regular season, the team will need to improve their rebounding and defensive fundamentals. With the regular season quickly approaching, it is crucial for the Nuggets to address and rectify these issues to ensure a strong start to the season.
