‘The perfect place to say goodbye’ – Mouratoglou on Serena’s US Open heroics

Serena Williams might be carefully avoiding the use of the word “retirement” – but her long-time coach Patrick Mouratoglou has picked out her spectacular performance at this year’s US Open as one of his tournament highlights.

In an Instagram post, the Frenchman said: “Coming from where she was coming the previous weeks, [it] is big. And the fact that she was at home, in the US, it was the perfect place for her to say goodbye.”

Williams reached the third round of the 2022 US Open, defeating Danka Kovinic 6-3, 6-3 in the first round, and then knocking out then-world No 2 Anett Kontaveit 7-6 (4), 2-6, 6-2.

She was finally stopped by Ajla Tomljanovic of Australia in the third round, 7-5, 6-7 (4), 6-1.
