There were bizarre scenes at the Washington Open when a blockbuster tennis match was interrupted by in an unusual delay.

Tennis: Aussie Thanasis Kokkinankis has been knocked out of the DC Open, falling to World number 36 Ugo Humbert.

In the middle of a match during the Mubadala Citi Open in Washington, D.C. on Friday, climate activists from numerous organisations unfurled banners, chanted and tossed oversized balls on the tennis court to stop play between Taylor Fritz and Andy Murray and draw attention to their cause.

“Stop funding fossil fuels, Citi stop now!” the protesters chanted, making it impossible to continue the match as fans booed, the NY Post reports.
