Despite finishing fourth in the now-concluded tournament, they have won accolades from others, including Nick Kyrgios. However, his reaction to commemorating the team with a statue has sparked a debate online.
The women’s team, also called The Matildas enjoyed a fabulous run on home soil. But they were unable to overcome England, losing 1-3 to the Lionesses in the semifinal. Further, heartbreak awaited them as they lost 0-2 against Sweden in the 3rd place match.
The Queensland Government decided to celebrate the women’s team’s achievement by erecting a statue. While Kyrgios acknowledged their efforts, he is not on board with the idea, and thinks it is “nuts.”
