British hopes never got past the first round at the Cincinnati Masters as a couple of seeds fell and the title favourite, the top seeded Carlos Alcaraz wobbled somewhat before securing his second round place.

First Andy Murray withdrew citing the abdominal injury which forced him out of playing his third-round match last week in Toronto and he was replaced by Germanys Daniel Altmaier to play Keren Khachanov who later, also withdrew still nursing a groin injury picked up during the French Open. His replacement was Alexei Popyrin of Australia.

On court both Cameron Norrie and Dan Evans suffered losses to Gael Monfils and Lorenzo Musetti respectively in what proved to be tricky first round matches for the top two Brits.
