Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will use the next meeting of national cabinet to campaign for a Federal public holiday, should the Matildas make it to the World Cup final.
With Sam Kerr expected to be back on the pitch, the Matildas will take on Denmark on Monday night in the do-or-die round of 16 match.
Should they beat the Danes, the Matildas would then take on either France or Morocco in the quarterfinals.
If they were to make it all the way to the grand final – to be played on August 20 – Mr Albanese says he would make a personal appeal to all state and territory leaders to instate a public holiday.
“Public holidays are up to state and territory leaders. But, you know what, we’ve got a national cabinet coming up next week,” he told 2Day FM on Monday.
“I’ll be clearly putting the argument, and I reckon they’ll fold like tents. They will go one after the other.
