Tom Dearden and Reuben Cotter will make North Queensland Cowboys history as the club’s youngest co-captains after it was announced two veterans would be stepping down from the role ahead of the 2024 season.
North Queensland confirmed in a statement on Sunday that lock forward Jason Taumalolo and halfback Chad Townsend were giving up the captaincy, with the Cowboys looking towards the future by naming Dearden and Cotter as their replacements.
Townsend and Taumalolo will remain part of the club’s leadership group.
Cowboys coach Todd Payten explained that while a tough call the decision was made with the team’s long-term interests in mind.
