Birmingham: Veteran squash player Rachael Grinham and three-time hockey gold medallist Eddie Ockenden will jointly carry the flag for Australia at the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony in Birmingham.
Grinham, 45, is an eight-time medallist and is the first squash player in the history of the Games to carry the flag. It is only the second time there have been co-flag bearers for Australia; cycling twins Sal and Remo Sansonetti were the last to jointly carry it in 1978 in Edmonton.
The Queenslander has been synonymous with the sport of squash for two decades, having made her Commonwealth Games debut in 1998 in Kuala Lumpur as a 21-year-old, winning silver with Robyn Cooper in the women’s doubles. She is representing Australia in her sixth games.
