South Sydney coach Jason Demetriou denied a breakdown with club legend Sam Burgess was behind a decision for the assistant coach to walk away from his role immediately with the Rabbitohs’ finals chances hinging on a last round clash with the Roosters.
On a tumultuous Wednesday morning, Burgess met with club officials before confirmation he’d been relieved of his duties amid speculation of a rift with head coach Demetriou who conceded he has had “differences” with the premiership hero.
But as club CEO Blake Solly said the decision was made after “a good conversation with Sam” and the board, Demetriou said he played little part.
“I didn’t want Sam out of the club. It is what is. Decisions have been made and we move on,’’ Demetriou said.
