Apart from Marcus Bontempelli claiming his fifth best and fairest, Aaron Naughton’s eight-year contract extension stole the headlines at Wednesday night’s Charles Sutton Medal.
Naughton, who was set to come out of contract at the end of the 2024 season, will now remain at the Whitten Oval for nine more years until the end of the 2032 campaign.
While Naughton has shown glimpses of stardom for the Dogs, his contract coincided with a ninth-placed finish in Wednesday’s count and Kane Cornes couldn’t believe the length of tenure that the club was happy to offer.
Cornes simply can’t see how having Naughton attached to the salary cap until the end of 2032 makes the Bulldogs better.
“He got a year for every position down the best and fairest ranking, he finished ninth and got nine years,” Cornes said on AFL Trade Radio’s The Early Trade.
