Top-ranked Jon Rahm, the reigning US Open champion, and fifth-ranked Justin Thomas each fired eight-under par 63s to share the lead after Thursday’s opening round of the US PGA Northern Trust.
They are three shots clear of Harold Varner III in third, while Australia’s Adam Scott is tied for fourth after firing a four-under 67.
Scott had just one bogey for the day along with three birdies and an eagle on the par-five sixth to give him a crucial strong stat as he tries to claw his way into the second week of the US60 million ($A82 million) FedExCup playoffs.
