Top-ranked Scottie Scheffler is grimly trying to hold off a charging pack led by the brilliant Collin Morikawa in Thursday’s opening round of the US PGA Tour’s season-ending Tour Championship, while Rory McIlroy struggled through a back injury.
Scheffler, this year’s Players Championship winner, began on 10-under par at East Lake in Atlanta with a two-stroke lead over Norway’s Viktor Hovland thanks to staggered scoring based upon season point totals.
But two-time major winner Morikawa, who began on 1-under and nine strokes adrift of Scheffler, fired a stunning nine-under par 61 to leap to a share of the lead when Scheffler triple-bogeyed the par-three 15th after finding the water off the tee then three-putting.
