Jason Day has gone some way to vindicating his decision to play in the PGA Tour Championship finale, rather than staying home for the birth of his fifth child. The Aussie golf star gave himself an outside chance of stealing the Tour Championship on Thursday after Scottie Scheffler left the door open in the opening round in Atlanta.
Under the FedEx Cup finale scoring system, Day started nine shots behind Scheffler heading into the tournament. Scheffler started with a two-shot advantage at 10-under par, but the top-seed stumbled with a one-over 71 as fellow American Collin Morikawa emerged as the big first-round mover.
