The father of a big name Blue was recognised after an incredible achievement at local level. He reflects on the honour and his unusual journey up to Brisbane to watch his son.
As coach of the entire Ocean Grove under-16 squad, Walsh would start at 8:15am around Geelong leading the Division 1 side, which included his son, Tommy.
Showing the same dedication to his two older sons as he did to the Grubbers’ junior program, Walsh would catch a bit of the Div 3 or Div 5 game if it was on before jumping in the car to watch Blues star Sam play for Carlton, or to Lismore to see Henry in action the Mininera and District Football League.
There were a couple of occasions where Wayne and his wife Jacque managed to watch both of them in the one day.
