The AFL has unveiled its AFLW expansion plans, with every club to have a team in the women’s competition by the end of 2022.
AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan announced there’d be an 18-team competition for the 2022-2023 AFLW season, with Essendon, Hawthorn, Port Adelaide and the Sydney Swans to be included.
“Today is a pretty defining day, I think, in the history of Australian football,” McLachlan told reporters.

“Simply, the competition is now whole. We have 18 AFLW clubs is to send a message to every female playing footy that they now can play for any one of our 18 AFL teams.”
