Usman Khawaja has revealed he played a key role in changing the ICC’s strict over-rate regulations, helping his teammates save close to $230,000 in match fines.
Australia was reportedly set to be handed heavy fines and World Test Championship point penalties for slow over-rates during the first three Ashes Test against England.
However, Khawaja contacted ICC’s general manager of cricket Wasim Khan and raised players’ concerns about the level of punishments. In response, the ICC changed its fine structure over the weekend, capping match fees to 50 per cent.
Australia subsequently saved close to $230,000 in fines, according to AAP, potentially reducing their WTC points sanction as well.
