There were bizarre scenes at Old Trafford on day one of the fourth Ashes Test, with the sun’s glare causing a lengthy delay during the morning session in Manchester.
During the 14th over of Australia’s first innings, Marnus Labuschagne was distracted by the sun’s reflection coming off a metal band underneath some unoccupied seats behind the bowler’s arm. Drinks were taken as ground staff attempted to resolve the issue.
The farcical delay was particularly amusing considering the overcast conditions in Manchester on Wednesday, with light rain falling before play.
England bowler Stuart Broad took matters into his own hands, politely requesting nearby patrons move from their seats to block the dazzle. Moments later, a staff member appeared with a roll of tape.
However, the sun finally shifted back behind the clouds, allowing play to continue.
