England vs Australia fifth Test, Moeen Ali groin injury, video, cricket news

England is sweating on the fitness of Moeen Ali after the spinner sustained a right groin injury on day one of the fifth Ashes Test at The Oval.

Early in the afternoon session, the 36-year-old pulled up sore after running through for a single, with the left-hander requiring medical attention on the field.

Ali continued his innings after a lengthy consultation with the team medic, but it soon became apparent he couldn’t run between the wickets. The left-hander was forced to deal in boundaries, smacking 23 runs from his next nine deliveries before falling victim to rival tweaker Todd Murphy for 34.

Ali did not join his teammates when Australia’s first innings got underway in the evening session, with an England spokesperson confirming he was still being assessed.
