Tasmanian opener Caleb Jewell has thrown his hat in the ring for David Warner’s spot in the Test side after peeling off a century during Australia A’s 68-run loss to New Zealand in Mackay.
The left-hander smacked 131 from 169 balls, including 17 boundaries and two sixes, before Australia was rolled for 233 on a rain-affected fourth day at Great Barrier Reef Arena.
New Zealand A completed a 2-0 series whitewash over the hosts on Thursday, having defeated Australia A by 255 runs in last week’s four-day contest in Brisbane.
Australia A, tasked with chasing 302 for victory, steadily lost wickets throughout the afternoon as the Kiwi seamers wreaked havoc with the swinging pink Kookaburra.
“They bowled well,” Jewell told reporters at stumps.
“We just weren’t good enough unfortunately to keep them out for long enough.”
