The Thunder, Sam Presti’s ‘pivot’ and why the darlings of the NBA are preaching patience

subsequent Q&A session with reporters. The main topic of discussion was the Thunder’s rebuilding process and their young roster, led by the promising rookie guard, Josh Giddey.

Presti began by acknowledging the challenging nature of rebuilding, especially after a successful stretch that included multiple playoff appearances and a trip to the NBA Finals. But he emphasized the importance of embracing the process and remaining patient.

“We’re in a transition phase,” Presti said. “It’s not a secret. It’s not something we’re hiding from. We’re embracing the challenge of building something sustainable.”

One of the main reasons for optimism in Oklahoma City is the arrival of Giddey, the 19-year-old Australian point guard selected with the sixth overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. Giddey, a 6-foot-8 playmaker with excellent court vision and passing skills, has already made an impression on both his teammates and coaching staff.

“He’s been phenomenal,” said Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault. “His basketball IQ is off the charts, and he has a maturity beyond his years. Josh has the potential to be a special player in this league.”

Giddey’s versatility and potential have already been on display in preseason action, as he has shown an ability to contribute in multiple areas. His 9-point, 7-rebound, and 5-assist performance against the Utah Jazz drew praise from his teammates and coaches.

“He’s got a great feel for the game,” said Thunder forward Darius Bazley. “He’s not afraid to make the right play, whether it’s scoring, passing, or rebounding. He’s a real asset for us.”

While Giddey’s potential is exciting, Presti highlighted the importance of managing expectations for such a young player. He stressed the need for development and patience as Giddey adjusts to the speed and physicality of the NBA.

“He’s going to have ups and downs, like any rookie,” Presti said. “Our job is to support and guide him through this process, to help him navigate the challenges and make progress.”

Presti’s cautious approach extends to the entire roster, as the Thunder prioritize player development over immediate results. The team’s payroll is currently among the lowest in the league, offering flexibility and the ability to take on future assets.

“In this league, you have to be patient and stick to your plan,” Presti said. “We’re focused on development and creating a culture of growth that will serve us well in the long run.”

While the Thunder’s primary focus is on the future, they also understand the importance of maintaining a competitive spirit. Even in a rebuilding phase, the team wants to compete and play the right way.

“We’re not tanking,” Presti emphasized. “We’re building a competitive team that will grow and improve. We want to establish a winning culture from day one.”

As Giddey adjusts to the NBA, he will have the support of experienced veterans like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Derrick Favors. Both players have embraced their roles as leaders and mentors for the young Thunder squad.

“We’ve got a great group of guys, both young and old,” Gilgeous-Alexander said. “We’re all working together, learning from each other. It’s a great environment for growth.”

Overall, the Thunder’s rebuilding process is just getting started. With a young core led by the promising Giddey, the team’s future looks bright. But Presti and the organization are well aware that success will take time and patience.

“We have a long-term vision,” Presti said. “We’re committed to building a sustainable and successful franchise. And we believe that’s exactly what we’ll achieve.”
