Gangurrus named for inaugural 3×3 Trans-Tasman Series

Australian Women’s 3×3 basketball team, known as the Gangurrus, is set to travel to New Zealand to compete in the inaugural 3×3 trans-Tasman series. The series, which will take place in Invercargill from October 25-28, will feature both a Women’s and a Men’s team from each country.

The Australian Women’s team consists of Mikhaela Cann from the Logan Thunder, Teyla Evans from the Eltham Wildcats, and Bride Kennedy-Hopoate and Jacqui Trotto from the Ringwood Hawks. This team is a new-look group, providing them with a valuable international opportunity to play against the New Zealand 3×3 Tall Ferns.

The Gangurrus Women’s team had a successful year, securing the gold medal at the FIBA 3×3 Asia Cup earlier in the year. However, for this trans-Tasman series, they will face a new challenge as they take on the Tall Ferns. The team is excited for this opportunity to test their skills against a strong international competitor.

On the Men’s side, the Gangurrus team consists of a group of exciting emerging talent. Three of the athletes are still in their teens and are currently scholarship holders at the Basketball Australia Centre of Excellence at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) in Canberra. This young team is eager to showcase their abilities on the international stage and gain valuable experience competing against the New Zealand Men’s team.

The 3×3 format of basketball is growing in popularity, with its fast-paced and dynamic style of play. The trans-Tasman series provides an opportunity for both countries to showcase their talent in this exciting format of the game. 3×3 basketball has been gaining traction as it will be included in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. This trans-Tasman series serves as a stepping stone for players to gain experience and prepare for potential future Olympic appearances.

The Gangurrus teams have been preparing for the series with intensive training camps and practice sessions. They are focused on building team chemistry and refining their skills in order to compete at the highest level. The Australian women’s team is particularly excited to face the challenge of the Tall Ferns, as the two teams have a long-standing rivalry in traditional basketball formats. This will be the first time they meet in 3×3 basketball, adding an extra layer of excitement to the matchup.

Both teams are eager to represent Australia and showcase the talent and potential of 3×3 basketball in the country. They believe that this series will not only provide a chance for them to compete against international opponents, but also to inspire young basketball players in Australia to pursue 3×3 basketball and aim for international success.

As the first-ever 3×3 trans-Tasman series, this event holds great significance for both countries. It is a stepping stone in the development and promotion of 3×3 basketball in Australia and New Zealand. The Gangurrus teams are determined to put on a show and make their mark in this inaugural trans-Tasman series. With their focus, determination, and skill, the Gangurrus are ready to take on the challenge and bring home success for Australia.
