Royal Sydney Golf Club denies encouraging members to use water taxi loophole

Sydney’s most exclusive golf club has dismissed reports it was encouraging members to exploit a loophole in public health orders by suggesting members from affluent north shore suburb Mosman take a water taxi to the Harbourside course.

According to a report in The Australian, a communication sent by Royal Sydney Golf Club to its members on Monday suggested “a Mosman member” would not be breaching NSW Health’s 5km restriction on exercise and recreation “if he or she came to the club via water taxi, but would breach the rule if he or she drove”.

Royal Sydney GC is located at Rose Bay in Sydney’s eastern suburbs and has hosted the Australian Open 15 times, while its members are some of the city’s most prominent people.

It is believed the initiation fee to join is more than $20,000 (new members have to be invited to join), while the annual fee is about $5000.
