Linda Burney, Malarndirri McCarthy respond to Hawthorn allegations

A “sickened” Linda Burney says all sporting codes – and society at large – need to take a long, hard look at how they support First Nations players and people.

The Indigenous Affairs Minister said allegations that three former Hawthorn football club players were allegedly mistreated by their then-coaches due to their race was “distressing”.

The allegations include claims one player was forced to convince his partner to terminate a pregnancy, and players were kept apart from their partners and families.

The coaches involved have denied the claims, and the AFL has announced a full investigation, lead by Kings Council.

Ms Burney said sport was a mirror to society, and racism “unfortunately, is a feature of many aspects of society”.
