Nick Kyrgios is on the cusp of a massive milestone victory on the grass courts of Wimbledon.
Kyrgios — the world’s 40th-ranked golfer — needs only to beat world No. 3 Novak Djokovic on Sunday to secure a victory at the All England Club. Of course, his appearance in the final is not without controversy. And that’s saying something for someone who seems to attract it.
Kyrgios advanced to the final in a walkover; his would-be opponent, Rafael Nadal, withdrew from the tournament following his five-set quarterfinal win over Taylor Fritz. Kyrgios beat his quarterfinal opponent, Christian Garin, in straight sets on Wednesday, setting up the would-be semifinal match with Nadal.
Instead, he stands to be well-rested heading into the final vs. Djokovic, who defeated his semifinal opponent, Christian Norrie, in four sets.
