Western Bulldogs star Aaron Naughton will await scans of his right knee on Friday but the club’s medical staff are “optimistic” he has avoided a dreaded ACL tear.

Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge said their forward line was dysfunctional in Naughton’s absence but praised his players as “winners” in a 14-point defeat to Sydney on Thursday night.

He said the decision to throw captain Marcus Bontempelli forward and entrust more midfield time to younger players including Ryley Sanders had almost paid off against the ladder leaders.

“The indications are that hopefully it’s not as extreme as an ACL, so you never can tell. Obviously they’ve looked at it a bit closely … fingers crossed it’s not too extreme,” Beveridge said…
