Cameron Smith shared the lead with two holes left in his LIV Golf debut, but suffered heartbreak right at the death with one errant tee shot that cost him the tournament in Boston, won by Dustin Jonson in a playoff.
Smith was playing one of the rounds of his life with six birdies, one eagle, and zero bogies on the card after 16 holes, putting him in a tie for the lead at the time with Dustin Johnson and Lee Westwood.
The winner of the event pockets $AUD5.9 million.
But Smith pulled his tee shot at the penultimate hole into the bushes, forcing him to chip out sideways and eventually make his first bogey of the day to drop out of the lead.
