Cricket Australia’s major sponsorship deal with Alinta Energy has concluded following a storm over Pat Cummins raising “ethical objections” with the provider’s partnership.
Athletes protesting against sponsors can “really hurt” small sports and can trickle down to grassroots levels, according to former NBA championship player Andrew Bogut.
Australian Test captain Pat Cummins’ stand against Cricket Australia’s sponsorship with Alinta Energy sees them without a major sponsor beyond June.
Mr Bogut said Australia is a small sporting market but also a “heavily flooded” market.
“As a minority owner of the Sydney Kings I’m well aware of how hard it is to get that sponsorship dollar and now you are making it even harder on yourself in a small pond,” he told Sky News host Paul Murray.
“It can be suicide for some sports.”
