Oklahoma City Thunder general manager Sam Presti has always been the type to do things his own way and did exactly that on draft night – yet it was still unexpected.
While rumours swirled that the Thunder would trade up for one of the top names, Presti and the Thunder went against conventional wisdom and held onto their stockpile of draft picks.
Instead, as NBA.com’s Kyle Irving put it, Oklahoma City “shocked the NBA world when they selected Giddey with the No. 6 pick”.

Sports Illustrated’s Jeremy Woo reported the Thunder did try to package a number of future picks to move up the draft and eyed Cleveland’s No. 3 pick but those talks “fell apart”.
Then Presti landed on Giddey and kept the secret until draft night.
