Daniil Medvedev has produced a stunning comeback from two sets down to earn his third Australian Open final berth, downing sixth seed Alex Zverev 5-7 3-6 7-6(4) 7-6(5) 6-3.
Zverev, who played this tournament under the cloud of domestic violence accusations and a looming trial, had only lost once when up two sets in 57 attempts – the 2020 US Open final against Dominic Thiem.
And in his biggest match since that day in New York, the German just couldn’t get over the line, losing two tense tiebreakers and then falling apart late.
“It’s a nightmare for Zverev, given what happened to him at the US Open,” Jim Courier said on Nine.
