Christopher O’Connell advanced to the third round of the men’s singles event at the Miami Open 2024 tennis tournament in Florida on Saturday.
The Australian tennis player, 66th in the ATP tennis rankings, upset world No. 22 Frances Tiafoe of the USA 7-7, 7(7)-6(5) after a hard-fought encounter to advance to the round of 32.
Another American tennis player, wild card entry Martin Damm, will be O’Connell’s opponent in the third round.
O’Connell had earlier accounted for the Czech Republic’s Vit Kopriva in the opening round of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament.
However, it was the end of the road for world No. 34 Jordan Thompson. The Aussie won the first set against France’s Gael Monfils, ranked 47th, but couldn’t see it through as he eventually lost 6(3)-7(7), 6-1, 6-2. The match lasted a gruelling two hours and 13 minutes.
