Wallabies past and present have hit back at NRL star Brandon Smith in the cheeky war of words following the announcement of Joseph Suaalii’s big-money move to union in 2025.
Smith – ever the comedian – was at his hilarious best in a press conference on Sunday morning, the day after the $1.6m-per-year deal hit the news.
And he was happy to take potshots at his young Roosters teammate for quitting league.
Smith joked that “a $1.6 million winger isn’t going to help you beat the All Blacks”, while claiming union should have spent the money on the grassroots instead of the teen talent.

But former 20-cap Wallabies centre Morgan Turinui hit back, labelling him a ‘fool’ for thinking Suaalii won’t make the Wallabies stronger.
