A ruthless start without the footy followed by a breathtaking third-quarter blitz by 35-year-old star Tom Hawkins has helped Geelong claim a hard-fought win over a wasteful Adelaide at Adelaide Oval.
The Cats applied a whopping 49 tackles in the first half, helping them skip out to an early 26-point lead before Adelaide mounted a comeback to hit the front in the third quarter.
But Hawkins kicked three goals in a match-turning third term to help the Cats steady and regain the lead, which they held for the rest of the match — despite some nervous late moments — to win by 19 points, 14.12 (96) to 11.11 (77).
