Richard Barbier, the Director of Strategy for the WNBA, is all in on collecting the data to better help players and improve the fan experience. While speaking at Day 1 of the Horizon Summit hosted by SportTechie, the San Francisco 49ers and Sports Business Journal at Levi’s Stadium, Barbier shared some of the WNBA’s best strategies for setting the foundation for sustained growth.
“At the end of 2019, we saw three consecutive seasons where our attendance was going downward,” Barbier said. “At the same time the number of games that were covered nationally also was on a downward trajectory. Basically, we saw fans were leaving our arenas and we weren’t making it any easier for them to find us on broadcast. … We knew a challenge was on the horizon.”
