Willie Rioli Senior death, WAFL, NTFL, St Mary’s, South Fremantle, Hawthorn Hawks, West Coast Eagles, Willie Rioli Junior, indefinite leave

The AFL community is mourning the death of former Hawk and Tiwi Islands Football League president Willie Rioli Senior.

The 50-year-old sadly suffered a heart attack and passed away on Tuesday night, AFL Northern Territory confirmed.

His son, West Coast’s Willie Rioli Junior, has now taken indefinite leave from the AFL to return to family in the Northern Territory.

Rioli Snr joined Hawthorn with pick 48 in the 1990 national draft, but never played a senior game for the club.

He dominated at both the WAFL and NTFL – with St Mary’s, becoming a NTFL player life member after winning multiple premierships and being selected in NT representative sides.

Willie Snr’s former WAFL club South Fremantle said it was “deeply saddened” by his shock passing.
