Foord revelling in landmark Arsenal win

It was a result that drew gasps throughout women’s soccer – and Matildas’ star Caitlin Foord has been left thrilled at having played a major part in a landmark European night for Arsenal.

There was a time not so long ago when Lyon’s dominance of the women’s game represented one of world sport’s great monopolies.

Yet on Wednesday night, the European champions, six times the Women’s Champions League winners in seven seasons, were shredded 5-1 on their home turf by Foord and her inspired Gunners’ teammates.

And central to the French maestros’ worst defeat in 16 years was the performance of the on-song 27-year-old Australian international centurion, who scored two beauties as Lyon also conceded five goals in a match for the first time since 2005.

The world’s top women’s side may have been weakened by a host of injuries, including to Foord’s colleague Ellie Carpenter, who’s been out of action…
