There’s just one day until Socceroos coach Graham Arnold reveals his 26-man squad for the World Cup (4pm AEDT Tuesday), and a host of Australians have put their name up in lights over the weekend as they try to ensure their names are on the list.
Right-back Ryan Strain had never scored a professional goal, but he broke that duck in style with a sublime free kick for St Mirren in Scotland.
Strain curled the near 30-yard attempt past the keeper to level the scores at 1-1 against Ross County, before his side fell to a 3-2 defeat. Remarkably, his goal follows in the footsteps of grandfather Gerry Baker, who is in the St Mirren Hall of Fame after scoring 66 times in 81 games for the club, including in the 1959 Scottish Cup Final as St Mirren beat Aberdeen.
